Lighting the Lamp |
Many a times I had wondered about the tradition of lighting lamps in Kerala tradition before auspicious occasions or in the evening. Last day I came across an article about this tradition. According to the tradition, light signifies knowledge. All our activities should be governed by the light of knowledge and dharma. By this knowledge, ignorance or darkness is dispelled and righteousness is let to prevail. Light symbolizes the beginning of awakening. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our negative tendencies and the wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the negative tendencies are exhausted and replaced by positive energy. Light symbolizes the absence of darkness, grief & unhappiness. Light is considered as the source of each form of life on Earth. In darkness light is considered to be the representation of the presence of the Sun, guiding us throughout the dark. Positive energy is spread all over the house through this representation.
