Architecture and Monotony

Architecture - Koodalmanikyam Temple, Irinjalakuda
Buildings always fascinated me. Each building throw a taste and emotion into the minds of the viewer. Some buildings evoke an emotion even if they are falling apart or primitive. A charm that could never be explained. These buildings and monuments have something that soothe us and inspire us. It happened that one day I was walking about in a small town and ended up among some newly built structures. It felt like a quick transition of time. Among the newly built houses, just a few had made me comfortable and astonished. The remaining buildings had always been a copy of a copy of a copy. Huge structures were made to impress, but one thing in common with these structures were, they were just buildings. May it be Kerala or Goa or Delhi, most of them were built to sell than built to live.

Indeed, in a city there is not much choice to exercise in selecting a house. But to turn a building into a home, gym or office it takes a step further. Our home is our identity, a castle for our soul. A place that reflects ourselves and rejuvenates our life to help us reciprocate more positive energy. When I moved into my first house, I didn't have an idea. I just got all the furniture and electronic appliances I could. Slowly I found that it just became nothing but a prison cell. A place to spend time and to sleep with a roof above my head. I didn't enjoy staying there. I hated to spend time indoors or to even cook my own food, because the loneliness within the house suffocated me. Same were few offices, restaurants or the gyms I frequented. It was later that some sense crept into my actions and thoughts. Knowingly or unknowingly, I filled the empty spaces and walls in my house. The type of buildings I associated with, if I had a choice always had something in common. Just try to recollect what your feelings are when you enter a gym that inspired you most. Same goes into an office or a home or a restaurant. I am not suggesting that sticking a few posters here and there will create a revolution, but to follow the principle of creating your own comfort zone to bring the best out of you.

No one seems to enjoy isolation anymore. Diversity is sacrificed and directed towards neutralization and uniformity. What could be suggested is that to take time to define your nest. If possible, brick by brick. In the process of mass duplication the identity of a home or an office is lost to the technological soundness of a prison cell. But human beings are conditioned to survive and evolve. Even in prison cells they learn to create art and to create a comfort zone. It is our choice to define our existence based on experiences we need to cherish. Yes, a good home always boost our professional and personal life. When we observe the buildings of the past, they were built to express and evoke than to fill a space. Compared to the ones built a century ago, the newly built temples or churches does make our mind more confused than make it comfortable. No matter how much we had progressed, in terms of architecture it is time for introspection or to take a step back. Buildings are expressions too. Many of the buildings of the past has their own identity not because it took years of scientific planning, but its soul was close to ours and that of the nature. Let there be uniqueness in each brick we place so that we can boast of a home that help us to overcome the imperfections of our daily life and remain to be a sanctuary to evolve our lives from. Let each one's home be their castle to nestle their memories and love.
